Cool Noons in Imola: Sustainable Urban Cooling Solutions
Imola’s Climate and Tourist Landscape
Imola is a city in the heart of the Emilia-Romagna region. Here centuries-old history harmoniously coexists with forward-thinking innovation. Known for its rich cultural heritage, Imola is home to architectural gems such as the Sforza Fortress and the San Cassiano Cathedral, alongside the world-renowned Autodromo Enzo e Dino Ferrari, which continues to attract motorsport enthusiasts from across the globe.
From a touristic point of view, Imola offers a unique blend of medieval charm, green landscapes, and vibrant local traditions. Its location along the Santerno River and proximity to the Tuscan-Romagna Apennines make it an ideal destination for visitors seeking both historical exploration and outdoor experiences.
Imola’s Climate Challenge & Increasing Heat
Imola faces hot, dry summers with temperatures frequently exceeding 35°C, particularly during heatwaves. The urban heat island effect (when cities trap heat more than rural areas) worsens these conditions, threatening public health and quality of life, particularly for vulnerable groups.
Imola’s specific microclimatic conditions and urban structure highlight the need for effective cooling interventions, positioning the city as a key testing ground for the innovative solutions proposed by the Cool Noons project.
Cool Noons Solutions in Imola
To combat urban heat in Imola, Cool Noons is implementing fast, realistic interventions, directly addressing urban heat through scalable, community-focused projects.
Though not a major metropolis, Imola proves that climate adaptation is possible for cities of all sizes. Its participation highlights how smaller urban centers can lead by example, tackling heat challenges with innovative, inclusive solutions.
Imola is transforming urban heat islands into cool, green havens through small-scale projects and smart interventions. This approach could inspire a wider Mediterranean movement, turning cool paths into biodiversity-rich corridors that restore ecosystems and redefine cities.
The Cool Paths Connecting the City Sustainably
To bring its vision to life, the Municipality of Imola analyzed tourist flows, heat-prone areas, and green infrastructure, designing three 2-kilometer Cool Paths that weave through Imola’s historic center and surrounding neighborhoods.
Each path starts and ends at key hubs: the train station and the Autodromo Enzo e Dino Ferrari, linking cultural landmarks, bustling attractions, and refreshing green spaces.
These Cool Paths merge Imola’s heritage with sustainable cooling, prioritizing walkability, shade, and accessibility: a testament to the city’s commitment to climate-resilient, people-centered urban mobility.
Cooling Solutions for Urban Spaces
Public spaces in Imola are as diverse as the people who use them: residents, visitors, and workers each bring unique needs and experiences. The Cool Noons project embraces this diversity, using participatory tools like workshops, community meetings, and on-site surveys along the city’s Cool Paths to gather real-time insights. By involving local administration, residents, and tourists in the co-design process, the project ensures that cooling solutions are both effective and responsive to the community’s actual needs.
To transform the city’s urban spaces into more welcoming and resilient environments, the project is implementing a series of targeted interventions:

Trees bring multiple benefits to urban environments beyond providing shade. By strategically planting and replacing trees in the city center, Imola helped reduce surface and air temperatures, improved air quality, and enhanced biodiversity.Trees also create inviting green spaces that encourage people to spend more time outdoors, contributing to both thermal comfort and the overall well-being of residents and visitors. |

Two new picnic tables, installed outside a local school, invite people to linger, connect, and enjoy the outdoors, enhancing both comfort and community spirit. |
