The University of Coimbra was classified as World Heritage by UNESCO in 2013 for its central role in the production of knowledge and dissemination of culture, as well as for the outstanding universal value of its campus. Its Department of Geography and Tourism has carried out relevant research on climate change, thermal comfort, and tourism. The Department of Geography and Tourism has developed notable work and training in sustainable and green tourism, due to the intercrossing with the relevant competencies of the faculty on Physical Geography, Tourism, and Heritage Studies.
