Marseille and Climate Change: A Social and Environmental Challenge

24/02/2025

Marseille, one of the Pilot Cities involved in the Cool Noons project, serves as a striking example of the challenges posed by climate change in Mediterranean cities. Recent discussions with local representatives highlighted two key issues: the environmental impact of climate change and its link to social inequalities.

The Environmental Impact of Climate Change in Marseille
In recent years, Marseille has experienced a significant rise in temperatures. Summers are increasingly marked by intense heat waves, putting urban livability to the test. However, the issue extends beyond the warmer months: even in winter, unusually high temperatures disrupt natural balances, triggering ripple effects on local ecosystems.

These climatic changes are compounded by extreme weather events such as flooding. In addition to causing severe damage to infrastructure, floods carry large amounts of waste directly into the port, exacerbating environmental challenges and underscoring the urgency for concrete and immediate actions.

Climate Change and Social Justice
Marseille also faces a social challenge tied to climate change: its effects disproportionately impact the city’s most vulnerable neighborhoods. Heat waves, for instance, directly affect the health and safety of residents in these areas, which are already burdened by economic and social inequalities.

City representatives emphasized the importance of addressing climate change as a matter of social justice, highlighting the need to protect the most fragile communities and include them in urban planning. This vision rests on a fundamental principle: combating climate change cannot be separated from the fight against social inequalities.

The Cool Noons project aims to tackle these challenges with sustainable and innovative approaches. By creating cooler pathways and implementing targeted environmental management solutions, Marseille aspires to become a model for other Mediterranean cities. Not only does it enhance urban thermal comfort, but it also lays the foundation for greater inclusivity and resilience, inspiring other cities to follow suit.
