Budva and the Cool Noons Project

04/02/2025

Budva, renowned for its spectacular natural beauty and remarkable historical heritage, is also one of the Mediterranean cities most affected by urban overheating during the summer months. Between May and September, temperatures reach significant peaks, exacerbated by dense urban development and the progressive reduction of green spaces.

This issue stems from rapid urban growth over the past 30 years, which has profoundly transformed the city’s landscape. Comparing today’s Budva with that of forty years ago reveals a dramatically different urban reality.

Aware of the need for intervention, Budva has joined the Cool Noons project, an initiative aimed at mitigating urban overheating through innovative and sustainable solutions. The project focuses on creating shaded pathways that connect key points of the city, making the urban experience more comfortable for both residents and tourists during the hottest months.

These routes not only enhance thermal comfort but also highlight the city’s unique natural resources, surrounded by mountains to the north, east, and west, and the sea to the south. Cool Noons represents a crucial step toward cultural change, raising awareness among citizens and local authorities about the importance of forward-thinking urban planning.

The goal is to transform Budva into a model of balance between urbanization and sustainability, paving the way for green policies that could inspire other Mediterranean cities.

Follow the Cool Noons project to discover how Budva is addressing climate challenges, blending tradition, innovation, and sustainability for a more livable and responsible future.
