Marseille and the Cool Noons Project: Sustainable Routes for Responsible Tourism

09/01/2025

Marseille, the second most populous city in France, is dedicated to transitioning toward a greener, more inclusive future, guided by the “Marseille 2030 Climate Objective.” As part of the Cool Noons project, Marseille has collaborated with the Tourist Office to create routes that not only highlight the city’s beauty but also ensure optimal thermal comfort during the hottest hours, providing a sustainable and enjoyable tourism experience.

Among the five routes selected, two were finalized and tested in the summer of 2024:

Route 1: from MUCEM to Palais Longchamp
This route is designed to offer maximum thermal comfort, prioritizing shaded streets and avoiding “canyon effects.” Starting from the MUCEM, located near the sea and refreshed by the sea breeze, the path traverses iconic landmarks like City Hall (Place Bargemon), Centre Bourse, and Cours Belsunce, finally reaching the green and shaded Palais Longchamp. This route combines culture, nature, and cool spaces, making it ideal for exploring Marseille sustainably.

Route 2: from the Old Port to the Olympic Marina
This route begins at the Old Port and winds through sunny streets, benefiting from the sea breeze. Along the way, visitors can enjoy shaded parks and beaches, offering refreshing breaks. The route was carefully designed to highlight Marseille’s natural and cultural heritage, ensuring a relaxing and sustainable experience for all.
These Cool Noons paths not only enhance the historic and natural heritage of Marseille but also promote responsible tourism by improving urban comfort for both residents and visitors.
